Using Your Love Muscle

What is it?

Your 'love muscle' is the PC muscle. PC stands for Pubococcygeus, a large muscle that goes around the anus and most of the floor of the pelvis. In women, the muscle fibres circle the vagina, and in men, they pass under the prostate gland.

What does it do?

Both women and men can benefit sexually from having a well-toned PC muscle; it can enhance your experience of orgasm and improve ejaculatory control, the PC muscle supports the contents of the pelvis, prevents urine incontinence, increases sexual pleasure for females and males, among other things.

Women with strong PC muscles often say that they have more toned-up vaginas, and can reach orgasm more easily. Many men who have trained their love muscle find that it allows them to delay orgasm and prevent premature ejaculation. A few men also say it lets them have two or more orgasms in a row without needing a 'rest' in between.

How do you find it?

Next time you pee, try to tighten up and stop the flow of urine. Notice the sensation, that's from tightening your PC muscle. Try it a few times to get the hang of it. Try squeezing it during sex to see if you like the sensations it causes, and ask if your partner likes it too.

Wanna work out?

To make those love muscles stronger, you have to work out. The exercises are called Kegels, and usually involve tensing for two seconds, then relaxing for two seconds. Kegel exercises are repeated several times for a few minutes every day, and most people have noticeable results in a couple of months.

Exercising your PC muscle

Is pretty simple
  1. Imagine you are urinating. Now squeeze the muscles you would as if you were cutting off the flow of urine. Those are your PC muscles. Now let go and try it again. You are contracting the anterior or frontal part of the PC figure eight.

  2. Squeeze and release. If you are female-bodied, squeezing these muscles with increasing repetition helps strengthen your vaginal muscles. If you are male-bodied, strengthening this muscle can help you develop greater ejaculation control.

  3. Squeeze, take two. Now squeeze your muscles as if you were trying to prevent yourself from passing gas--this is the posterior part of the PC loop. We all hold too much tension in these muscles. The challenge is to learn to relax these muscles at will.

  4. Now do the posterior squeezes rapidly five times in a row. Try to be conscious of relaxing your anus after every squeeze. Try not to squeeze your thighs, butt or abs--just the PC.
